Mandated Parking Near Transit Banned
If you are looking for homes located near public transportation this will affect you. California Governer Gavin Newsom signed a bill that prevents local governments from mandating parking spaces as part of most expansions near public transit stops. Many law makers are trying to solve California’s shortage of affordable homes and combat climate change.
Most residents in Long Beach and Los Angeles County urban areas already have a hard time finding parking will this backfire or is it a sign of the times?
Assemblywoman Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) created this bill which becomes law in January. While cities can impose parking for hotel developments, and developers can still build parking spaces for any type of project; parking minimums will no longer be allowed for housing, retail and other commercial developments within a half-mile of major public transit stops.
Some developers have stated that this bill will allow them to create cheaper apartments passing the savings down to clients while charging more for units with parking. In my opinion developers seem to love this idea while politicians are residents are more skeptical.
